Simple steps to radically improved patient outcomes and job satisfaction

Janette Gale is a health psychologist specialising in clinical practice methodology to improve patient outcomes through increasing patient adherence to evidence-based recommendations. She is the founder and CEO of HealthChange Australia, a specialist behaviour change consulting company. She and her colleagues (including physiotherapists) have trained more than 8,000 clinicians and worked with dozens of health service organisations in Australia and Canada to improve health service efficiency and outcomes and clinician work satisfaction. They work at the cutting edge of allied health clinical practice.

Whilst Physiotherapists and Physiotherapy Assistants are very familiar with the biopsychosocial model, most have been trained to deliver their services with a focus largely on biological science rather than psychosocial factors. This partly explains patients’ relatively low adherence rates to their advice.

Best practice in physiotherapy requires clinicians to move beyond this paradigm - to embedding their advice within a truly patient-centred delivery methodology that supports adherence to evidence-based recommendations.

Janette provides a framework for understanding what patients need from clinicians in order to act on their professional advice. She provides practical tips for delivering patient-centred care in a concrete and time- efficient way in standard consultations.
